InBody Scans For Corporate
InBody Scans For Corporate
Our team of ESSA Accredited Exercise Physiologists have many years of combined experience performing health related work in the corporate sector. From blood pressure readings, to cholesterol and glucose testing, to functional assessments, to manual handling observation and training, to ergonomic work station set ups, to nutrition and exercise programs… we have done it all!
But the popularity and response to our body composition scans in the work place have been eye opening! Your staff may have not had a body composition test done before, and may not realise where they actually sit from a health perspective with their body composition. No – not just the outdated BMI.
The scans always provide a lot of staff interaction, and in some cases, a healthy competitive scenario where some staff will try to improve their health more than their colleagues, which will earn them valuable bragging rights (as well as a healthier body!)
So how does this benefit your work place? We provide valuable insight into 3 key areas for your staff to focus on – the visceral fat, the bone mineral content, and the leg muscle mass.
And here is why…
Most office workers are sitting for a large portion of the day. They are quite inactive. Plus in this day and age, many of them either skip lunch breaks or eat their lunch whilst sitting at their desk. Then they will sit in their car or on the public transport to commute home. Then they may be sitting to watch TV in the evening.
All of this sitting is not good, because all of this inactivity leads to an increase of fat storage; most notably, the visceral fat. This is the fat around your internal organs, which at an increased level, can increase risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
The InBody scan shows this level of visceral fat, and how much needs to be reduced to reduce their metabolic risk factors, as mentioned above.
And because your staff may be sitting too long, their legs are not being used as much. Inactive legs leads to muscular atrophy, or a reduction of muscle mass. As the saying goes – “use it or lose it”. If we lose our leg muscle mass, we then experience a lack of strength in the legs. This lack of strength then can lead to a slower walking speed, reduced balance, and an increased risk of falls. As we age, this falls risk increases. And there can be so many complications if one experiences a fall.
The InBody scan shows how much muscle mass is on each leg, and if the client needs to do some specific leg strengthening exercises to increase muscle mass and therefore, reduce the risk of a fall, and to maintain quality of life as they age.
Bone mineral content is also shown on the results sheet. This is related to bone density, which is the strength of your bones. Lower muscle mass will lead to lower bone density, which will increase the risk of fractures and breaks if one were to fall. So the bone mineral content has correlation with the muscle mass. That is why we encourage everyone to be doing some form of resistance training for at least 2-3 days per week.
If your work place has a gym or provides health and wellness advice to your staff, then this can be another motivating tool for them to get active, and take proactive measures to maintain or increase the quality of their health.
After all, a healthy work place is a productive work place!
